Pop-up train carriages help bring back community to life

In Aarhus (Denmark), urbanization is getting stronger and stronger, and the need for new urban areas leads to use former industrial areas. To ensure the old and the new match better, the community of this former railroad industrial district has partnered with the AART design studio, following the suggestion of the non-profit organization Givisme. Together they have imagined and actually created  a pop-up village made of old train carriages, providing several activities, ranging from a single-room hotel, to a public greenhouse and boutiques for lifestyle brands and even polling booths for the upcoming local elections – all with a focus on showing how temporary architecture can provide new perspectives on a community-based and citizen-involving urban development. The train carriages will remain throughout the year 2017, preceding the construction of a complete new housing district.
