Is it the sun or the great air ? There is not only senior people rejuvenation in Palm Springs, but also economy hotels rejuvenation all around. The three last remarkable hotel renovations in the city are full rejuvenation. Old hotels have been given a second youth through design innovation, trendiness or brand integration.
The most advertised hotel in Palm Springs lately for its innovative visual transformation, the Saguaro Hotel is a former Holiday Inn. The usual three-storey buildings with the central pool has been entirely redecorated in a colourful design by a great design . The images were already great but the experience is a success. The place adds a happy humor to the nice colours, with a Barbie directory, the Mexican menu and the trendy smiling shop.
The second great rejuvenation has chosen trendiness to achieve a new life: the ACE hotel was a former Howard Johnson, with an attached Denny’s restaurant. They have chosen to create a vintage, black and white, hip atmosphere, keeping the old furniture and playing it casual in the restaurant and in the hotel with existing rooms re-organised with small room-patios and fireplaces for each block. Absolutely consistent in all elements.
The third rejuvenation is from a larger, and more upscale, hotel chain: Hard Rock Hotel has just opened its Palm Springs hotel on the basis of a former chain hotel. Again, no change in the hotel organisation and room structure; just the integration of the brand’s personality and features.
Let’s hope this rejuvenation momentum spreads around Palm Springs, so that we experience new generation economy hotels everywhere.

Pop-up ideas are interesting as they always try to innovate. And this initiative is another good example: Audi has created a bar on the ski tracks in St Moritz that celebrates two sides of the brand:
In Winter, the building celebrates Audi’s Ski World Championship sponsorship (note the two letters on the façade for W and M for WeltMeister, World Master in english ).
In summer, it will highlight the Quattro model as they surroundings of the building will allow visitors to try their 4-wheel drive cars .
The Bar is also beautiful, high-end and sophisticated, as the brand positions itself. Another good achievement for Audi.

This trend Trip to Las Vegas has been a great occasion to understand how entertainment has evolved in this city. After being through several hotels, casinos, restaurants and clubs, it seems to me that Las Vegas has experienced three different ages, establishing now a fourth age in the entertainment business.
First age – Desert Casinos hideaways
Las Vegas started at the beginning of the 20th century, with a petrol station along the road from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City, that decided to propose a casino to increase its business. All the places from that first age (hotels, restaurant and casinos) were all created on the same model: very visible buildings (thus the use of lighted signs to be seen from the road), not too high (to be visible from carriages and first automobiles), within which slot machines and games were immediately proposed as soon as you came through the doors. Free drinks, low price food, great women ensured that men stayed as long as possible in the place.
Second Age – Disney-style entertainment
To increase business, the Las Vegas hotels decided to attract a larger target, trying to include women, and for some families. This age created those incredibly fake decor hotels, based on universal themes: Circus Circus, Paris, Excalibur, Luxor … To games and slot machines, hotels added large audience shows, fun experiences (roller coaster) and exhibitions. But they kept games as the central offer, thus the impressive presence of machines inside the hotels. The road signs were replaced by original buildings which design created the attractiveness.
Third age – Luxury excessive
The next step was to attract higher level targets and larger touristic audiences. The creation of the Bellagio, bling-chic, with its luxurious shopping stores and gastronomic restaurant, has led the way for the Wynn, the Encore, the Mandala Bay … Those hotels were more structured like hotels, with entrances, lobbies and different areas proposing attractions, food experiences, worldwide-star shows and shopping malls. Buildings were more classical, trying hard to express luxury and good taste.
Fourth age – Night life
Even if gaming still represent 36% of the revenues in the city, the most promising evolution comes from clubs and night-life. Every reference hotel is now proposing a very impressive, trendy and active night-club, hosting famous world-class DJ for one-of-a-kind nights. This business choice brings a younger target to Las Vegas, eager to spend and enjoy. And lines in front of those clubs, at night, clearly demonstrate the success of this formula. The new comer in Las Vegas, the Quad, half-open during Christmas, seems a good expression of this trend: a designed building, completely closed to the outside, baring very few lights, with an entrance quite difficult to find (secretive symbol).

Luxury hotels are always looking for differentiation and innovative offers to conquer new clients. An interesting move is appearing, presenting gardens as a sensitive addition to a luxury hotel experience, just as spa were the service to offer 10 years ago.
In the same time global fast-food brands change their restaurants to avoid the standardised feeling and improve their client experience (see the latest McDonald’s restaurant achievement by clicking here), the radical opposite approach also exists in Asia. (more…)
Express biodiversity in a building is a difficult task, and yet an experiential concept begins with deciding what the place, inside and outside, must communicate. (more…)
Within the stores/restaurants family, Yuman offers a great experience. All the experience ingredients of the place are perfectly balanced: the products (100% organic, and wisely selected), the food (creative home cooking), the decoration (Michael Malapart, with a great mixing of raw materials and bright atmosphere) and the restaurant system (fixed formula at lunchtime and à la carte on evenings and weekends). Not to mention the welcoming smile of the team including Gilles Tessier, the creator of the site. Yuman presents itself as the “bright restaurant” and it does succeed to do so. Long live Yuman!

A magnificent demonstration of the change created by the transformation of a place: Gatorade has volunteered to transform secretly the locker room of an American basketball junior team. The room had never changed since 1962 and they transformed it, exactly, in a NBA locker room. And how did the teens feel? amazed, considered, and much more motivated. The impact of the experience on humans …

How can you create a warm and gastronomic atmosphere using concrete? In adding wood, light and colors and in articulating spaces together. This fish restaurant in Lima is an experience in itself, alternating different spaces surrounded by high concrete walls. Dining rooms and patios create different atmospheres, avoiding the feeling of confinement and harshness brought by concrete. A very clever design.

Ice-cream shops often have to choose between ice and cream to create a different shopping experience: some favour the icy feeling and relate to floe and penguins, and the other prefer the cream/ desert angle, demonstrating it through reference to cows (such as Ben&Jerry’s universe) or to sweets.
This Ice-Cream shop have definitely chosen to create a tea salon experience, providing a fresh, cosy environment with nice seating for clients to stay an enjoy, and adding modern elements with the vintage copper touch, a hint to the Willy Wonka world, maybe. An original and bold approach.
