Un musée de l’illustration et du dessin contemporain se devait d’être pensé comme un lieu de lignes, non ? Et c’est l’aspect graphique qui l’a en effet emporté dans le musée ABC de Madrid. En réhabilitant une ancienne usine, les architectes ont reconstruit façades et circulations pour ajouter un effet graphique dessiné assez réussi.
A museum of contemporary illustration and drawings had to be thought of as a place for lines, right? And this is the look that has indeed been created at the ABC Museum in Madrid. In rehabilitating an old factory, architects rebuilt facades and circulations to add a graphic effect, as if walls were drawn. It is quite impressive.

“Dormir dans l’avion” est une expression à prendre littéralement dans les chambres de l’hôtel Costa Verde au Costa Rica. Car certaines d’entre elles sont aménagées dans ce Boeing 727 de 1965 (vintage !). Quel malheur que la décoration intérieure des chambres ne soient pas à la hauteur … Enfin, on peut toujours se consoler dans leur restaurant El Avion, installé lui dans un autre type d’avion, que je vous laisse découvrir dans le diaporama.
“Sleep in the plane” is a reality in the Costa Verde hotel in Costa Rica. Some of the rooms they propose are in this vintage Boeing 727, dated 1965. Yet, the inside decoration is a shame as it does not build on this great original plane idea… But you can still have a beer in their restaurant, El Avion, where you drink and eat in another plane. Which one ? Take a look at the slide show.

Ce projet est tellement démesuré que l’on ne sait par quel bout l’expliquer : 18 arbres géants, mesurant entre 25 et 50 mètres; conçus en jardins verticaux abritant des espèces rares et grimpantes; à la pointe de la technologie, puisqu’ils produisent leur propre énergie (avec des capteurs solaires), leur permettant de diffuser de l’énergie et de s’illuminer la nuit; ils produisent leur propre irrigation, en transformant l’humidité en eau et en la diffusant aux plantes incluses dans leur tronc; ils produisent leur propre ventilation et participent à la climatisation des serres attenantes. Des merveilles de conception, de technologie, de respect de l’environnement. Et des beautés tout court, que vous pouvez approcher de tout près grâce aux chemins suspendus. Quand Singapour décide de s’investir dans la protection de l’environnement, leurs réalisations sont à la hauteur de l’enjeu.
This project is so vast that no one knows where to start the explanations: 18 giant trees, measuring between 25 and 50 meters; vertical gardens with rare species and vines; at the cutting edge of technology, since they produce their own energy (solar panels), allowing them to radiate energy to the plants and light up at night; they produce their own irrigation, turning moisture into water for the plants included in their trunk; they produce their own air conditioning and participate in the aire control of the greenhouses nearby. Marvels of design, technology, respect for the environment. And beauties that you can closely approach thanks to suspended paths . When Singapore chooses to invest in the protection of the environment, their achievements are up to the challenge.

L’élévation de l’âme. C’est toujours ce que les chapelles catholiques essaient de transmettre au travers de leur architecture. La Thorncrown Chapel y réussit doublement: par son architecture, toute en verticalité, et par le choix osé de la transparence qui permet d’y ajouter les troncs des grands arbres. Une insertion que l’on qualifierait aujourd’hui de très écologique. La chapelle date pourtant de 1980, construite par un disciple de Frank Lloyd Wright. A se demander où se trouve notre innovation architecturale ?
Rising your spirits, the rise of the soul. All catholic chapels try to express those ideas through their architecture. The Thorncrown Chapel is a double success in meeting the objective: its vertical architecture is a start. But it is the integration of the high tress through the transparency of the structure, that multiplies the rising effect. It would easily be qualified as ecologic architecture today. Yet, this chapel dates 1980, built by a Frank Lloyd Wright alumni. Is architecture truly innovating today ?

Un bâtiment tout en décalage que cet immeuble Ironbank qui abrite principalement des locaux commerciaux et un parking. Au sein d’un ancien quartier victorien, le choix architectural a beaucoup choqué les habitants. Pourtant, il est très réussi et crée intérêt et admiration par son aspect comme par sa praticité intérieure.
A zig-zag building that mainly offers commercial spaces and a parking. In the midst of an old Victorian quarter, the very disruptive architecture has been strongly opposed but has finally been adopted. And it really looks like a good choice for the area, as well as for the offices that will work from there.

L’une des tendances des nouveaux restaurants est le retour des restaurants de viande. Assumant l’animal, revendiquant une virilité du sang ou redonnant du chic au bovin, voici trois exemples de restaurants intéressants dédiés à la protéine animale.
Dans l’ordre, dans le Diaporama, le restaurant Tramshed de Mark Hix à Bath, qui transforme un entrepôt en lieu de gastronomie; suivi du Beef Club de Paris où l’aspect bistrot viril a clairement choisi de célébrer le goût des hommes pour la viande; et enfin le Beef Bar à Monaco qui apporte lui un glitter chic masculin à la viande rouge.
A croire que le sang inspire les architectes…
One of the key trends in restaurants is the renewal of meat restaurants. Those restaurants claim their love for the animal, boost their testosterone in their decor or add chic to meat degustation. Here are three examples in the slide show:
First the Tramshed restaurant in Bath, where Mark Hix has chosen to transform a warehouse into a temple dedicated to meat. Second tha Beef Club in Paris, where the bistrot atmosphere meet the masculine touch. And finally the BeefBar in Monaco has chosen to offer a masculine glitter chic decor to meat enjoyment.
Meat and blood have always created good stories…

Franchir l’eau en passant en son sein, c’était l’expérience proposée par Moïse. Et c’est maintenant aussi celle que proposent les architectes RO&AD pour franchir la ligne de douves du Fort de Rooevere. Ce fort, qui au 17ème siècle, défendait le sud des Pays-Bas, est construit sous le niveau du sol, le rendant presque invisible. Alors quand il a fallu le rénover en conservant son aspect indétectable, les architectes ont proposé ce pont qui passe dans l’eau. Une solution parfaite qui offre en outre une expérience étonnante pour les visiteurs
Walking through the sea was one of Moses’s great achievement. You will now be able to do the same if you visit the Fort de Rooevere. This fortress used to protect the south of The Netherlands in the 17th century. Built under the sea level, it was completely invisible for the invaders. That’s why, when the architects were asked to create a bridge to reach the Fort, they proposed a bridge in the water rather than a bridge over the water. Keeping intact the invisible aspect of the fortress: no bridge to indicate where to go to enter the Fort !

Sous une montagne de neige se meurt un lieu incroyable. Redécouvert par le photographe Timothy Allen, le Buzludha de Bulgarie était un monument pour glorifier le communisme. Perché sur l’une des plus hautes montagne du pays, il démontrait les capacités et la richesse de l’URSS. Abandonné maintenant, le gel intense et la neige n’arrivent toutefois pas à cacher toutes ses beautés et il se transforme peu à peu en un autre lieu, un monument à la folie utopique des hommes.
Under the snow, an incredible place is dying. Re-discovered by the photographer Timothy Allen, Bulgaria’s Buzludha was a monument dedicated to Communism. Built on the top of one of Bulgaria’s highest mountain, it was meant to demonstrate USSR’s strength and wealth. Abandoned by humans, frozen by intense cold and covered by snow, it still is impressively beautiful. And doesn’t it transform itself into a monument demonstrating Man’s utopia ?

Quand l’école s’insère dans son environnement, construit dans les matériaux locaux et fait fonctionner les structures locales, l’école devient une démonstration pédagogique en elle-même. Et les enfants formés dans cette Green School à Bali sont et seront ainsi sensibilisés à leur environnement. Un très belle leçon.
When a school is built and operates as a local, environment-friendly place, it becomes a lesson in itself. And this lesson is a full part of this Green School in Bali. This school aims at providing education and earth-conscious attitude to children. Starting by itself was a very good idea.
